Unlocking stories of human-centered innovation

In 2012, I joined the faculty at Potsdam’s School of Design Thinking as a lecturer on storytelling in the innovation process.
Every year, the Hasso Plattner Institute offers 140 students the opportunity to complete an academic training program in design thinking, the only program of its kind in Germany.
Communicating innovative ideas is inherently challenging due to their novelty and unfamiliarity, which often lack a common frame of reference for audiences.
Coupled with the complexity of the idea and the diverse set of stakeholders involved, conveying such concepts requires more than just relaying information. It demands skillful storytelling, clear analogies, and a sensitivity to potential emotional and practical barriers inherent in introducing something new.
Under my guidance and that of other HPI mentors, the students not only developed innovative ideas but also refined their ability to present them compellingly.
This merger of innovative thought and compelling storytelling equipped them with a unique skill set, significantly boosting their marketability in a competitive job landscape.
